Dreams of the future

The autumn is here. People are changing their summery clothes to shades of beige, grey and black, as seen in morning rush hour out and about. Instead of resisting the boredom, it is easier to embrace it – to fall into hibernation and sleepwalk through a season. Why on earth do I put up with this miserable climate here in UK, like millions of other immigrants alike?

Well, it’s quite ok here after all; work is great, I’ve made awesome friends, it’s hip and happening here. And the style is pure London, a superb place to be for a designer. Also let’s not forget nature outside London: gorgeous. Apart from the most boring seasons that are upon us. Read more

Those who endure conquer: a lesson about fear

Why anyone afraid of deep & dark waters would join a clipper boat and sail around the world?

Yesterday I went to a 20 km (12 miles) hike with a bunch of nice people. There I met this wonderful lady who told about her fear of heights. She told how she used to be so insecure that even stepping up on a kitchen ladder made her burst into tears. But instead of submitting to crippling fear, she challenged herself to join a wall climbing course. Read more

The quest for funds

An obsession has reached maturity when one wakes up in the early hours, both heart and thoughts racing.

“How can I EVER afford to join the circumnavigation race?”
“Who I can convince to sponsor me in this current financial climate?”
“What can I do to give return for their investment?”

Countdown

Some people know about my plans. Many do not.

Those who know me have probably noticed that I have a tendency to think big. Gigantic. Gargantuan. Well, no exception here:

I have applied to a sailing race around the world, and this Monday I am going to do an interview with the organisers. Based on the interview I will be either accepted to further stages of selection process or sent back home.

This might be an interesting fact to fill in from the very beginning: my sailing experience is non-existent. Last summer I went to Greece to a sailing holiday for seven days on a Jaguar 27 boat, and that’s it. Fortunately there is plenty of time to convert from a beginner to a semi-professional sailor, but it’s not going to be easy. I’m thinking of Sir Robin Knox-Johnston and Dame Ellen MacArthur – they circumnavigated single-handed, so that’s something to look up to.
